Acropora Coral Care Guide for Reef Aquariums

Reef aquarium with coral formations

Acropora is one of the most sought-after SPS (small polyp stony) corals for its branching structure and vivid coloration, but it’s also considered an intermediate-to-advanced coral due to its sensitivity to water quality.

Why Acropora Is Demanding

Unlike hardier soft corals, Acropora needs very stable, high-quality water and will quickly show signs of stress (bleaching, tissue recession) if parameters drift. This makes it a poor choice for tanks younger than six months to a year.

Lighting

Acropora needs strong, full-spectrum lighting to support its zooxanthellae. Acclimate coral to new lighting gradually over several weeks to avoid light shock, even when the light appears “good enough.”

Water Flow

Strong, turbulent, randomized flow helps prevent detritus buildup on the branching structure and encourages healthy polyp extension.

Water Chemistry Targets

Maintain calcium around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm, with minimal swings week to week. Consistency matters more than hitting an exact number. Our Complete Guide to Coral Reef Tanks covers the dosing fundamentals in more depth.

Placement

Give Acropora colonies plenty of space from neighboring coral, since they can sting nearby species and are themselves sensitive to being stung or shaded.

Where to Start

If you’re new to SPS, start with a hardier Acropora frag from a reputable source and monitor closely for the first few weeks. Browse our corals & anemones selection, including Waving Hand – Blue Xenia.
