Filtration is the single most important piece of equipment in any aquarium, but the range of filter types on the market can be confusing for new hobbyists.
Hang-on-Back (HOB) Filters
HOB filters are the most common choice for small to medium tanks. They’re easy to install, easy to maintain, and offer solid mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration in one unit.
Canister Filters
Canister filters sit below or beside the tank and offer much larger media capacity, making them ideal for larger tanks, heavily stocked tanks, or setups with high-bioload fish like goldfish and cichlids.
Sponge Filters
Sponge filters are simple, inexpensive, and gentle, making them a favorite for breeding tanks, fry grow-outs, and shrimp tanks where strong intake flow could harm small or delicate livestock.
Which Should You Choose?
For most beginner community tanks under 40 gallons, a quality HOB filter is a great balance of cost, capacity, and ease of maintenance. Larger or heavily stocked tanks benefit from the extra capacity of a canister filter. Breeding and shrimp tanks usually do best with a sponge filter.
Sizing Your Filter
Always choose a filter rated for a tank larger than your actual tank size — a filter rated “up to 30 gallons” on a 20-gallon tank gives you a comfortable margin, especially important for higher-bioload fish covered in our goldfish care guide.
