South American Cichlids Care Guide

Cichlid fish in tank

South American cichlids range from the peaceful, well-known angelfish to large, intelligent species like oscars, but nearly all share a preference for softer, more acidic water than their African Rift Lake relatives.

Water Chemistry

Most South American cichlids do best in slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.5), a stark contrast to the alkaline preferences covered in our African cichlid guide. Never mix the two groups in the same tank due to conflicting chemistry needs.

Tank Setup

Driftwood, leaf litter, and dense planting mimic the blackwater and slow-moving river habitats many of these species come from, and larger species need generous swimming room and robust filtration.

Temperament

Temperament varies enormously by species — dwarf cichlids like rams are relatively peaceful, while larger species can become territorial, especially when breeding or defending fry.

Diet

Most South American cichlids are omnivorous, accepting high-quality pellets supplemented with occasional live or frozen protein.
