Tang Fish Care Guide: Tank Size and Diet for Healthy Tangs

Blue tang fish in reef tank

Tangs (surgeonfish) are prized for their vivid color and active swimming, but they need considerably more space than their initial small size suggests.

Tank Size

Tangs are active, long-distance swimmers even as juveniles and need a tank with plenty of open swimming room — many species need 100+ gallons once fully grown, more than most other similarly-priced saltwater fish.

Diet

Tangs are largely herbivorous grazers in the wild and need regular access to marine algae (nori) or vegetable-based foods in addition to standard flakes or pellets to stay healthy long-term.

Disease Susceptibility

Tangs are notably prone to marine ich, making a proper quarantine period especially important — see our quarantine tank guide.

Compatibility

Tangs can be territorial toward other tangs, especially of similar shape or color, so research compatibility carefully when combining multiple individuals.
