Freshwater eels bring a unique, serpentine presence to an aquarium and tend to be hardy once their specific needs are met, but they aren’t a fit for every community tank.
Tank Security
Eels are notorious escape artists and can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. A tight-fitting, well-sealed lid is non-negotiable.
Tank Setup
Provide plenty of hiding spots such as PVC pipe, driftwood, or dense plant cover, along with a soft substrate, since many eel species like to burrow.
Diet
Most freshwater eels are carnivorous, accepting live or frozen foods like bloodworms and small fish, and many will learn to take sinking pellets over time.
Compatibility
Many eel species are nocturnal and generally peaceful toward similarly-sized tankmates, though small fish that fit in their mouths may be viewed as food.
