GloFish Care Guide: The Science and Care Behind Fluorescent Fish

Tropical fish tank community

GloFish are fluorescent varieties of common aquarium species like danios, tetras, and barbs, developed originally for scientific research and later brought to the aquarium trade for their striking color under blue or UV light.

Care Requirements

Because GloFish are genetically modified color variants rather than a separate species, their care needs are identical to the base fish — GloFish danios need the same conditions as regular zebra danios, for example.

Tank Setup

A dark substrate and a blue-spectrum LED light make GloFish colors pop dramatically, though they’re perfectly healthy under standard aquarium lighting too.

Social Needs

Like their non-fluorescent counterparts, most GloFish varieties are active schooling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more for both welfare and natural behavior.

Tank Mates

GloFish danios and barbs are fast, active swimmers best paired with similarly active tankmates rather than slow, long-finned fish that might get nipped.
