Gourami Care Guide: Peaceful Labyrinth Fish for Community Tanks

Gouramis are labyrinth fish, meaning they have a specialized organ that lets them breathe atmospheric air at the surface, an adaptation to the oxygen-poor waters of their native habitats.

Tank Setup

Because gouramis periodically visit the surface to breathe, always leave a small air gap between the water line and any tight-fitting lid, and avoid excessively strong surface agitation from filters that could disrupt this behavior.

Size and Temperament

Size and temperament vary widely by species — dwarf gouramis stay small and peaceful, while larger species like the gold gourami can become territorial as they mature, particularly toward other males.

Diet

Gouramis are omnivorous and accept most prepared foods, including flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen treats like bloodworms.

Tank Mates

Peaceful community fish like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras catfish make good tankmates. Avoid pairing multiple male gouramis of the same species in a smaller tank, as they may fight.
