Mollies are hardy, adaptable livebearers available in balloon, sailfin, and lyretail varieties, among many others.
Water Conditions
Mollies tolerate a wide pH range and, unusually among common aquarium fish, actually do well with a small amount of aquarium salt or in brackish setups, which can help prevent certain bacterial and fungal issues.
Tank Setup
A planted tank of 20 gallons or more with good swimming space suits mollies well, particularly larger sailfin varieties that need more horizontal room.
Diet
Mollies benefit from a diet with some vegetable matter included, such as blanched vegetables or algae-based foods, alongside standard flakes or pellets.
Breeding
Mollies are prolific livebearers and will breed readily in a community tank; see our guppy breeding guide for fry-raising tips that apply equally well to mollies.
