Freshwater Angelfish Care Guide

Angelfish swimming in aquarium

Freshwater angelfish are a type of cichlid known for their graceful, triangular silhouette and long trailing fins, making them a centerpiece fish in many community tanks.

Tank Size

Because angelfish grow tall and have long fins, a tank at least 18-20 inches tall is recommended, with 20-30 gallons minimum for a pair, more for a group. See our aquarium collection.

Tank Mates

Angelfish are semi-aggressive, especially as they mature and pair off. Avoid fin-nipping species like tiger barbs, and be cautious with very small fish like neon tetras, which adult angelfish may eventually view as food.

Diet

A varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp, keeps angelfish healthy and encourages breeding condition.

Breeding

Angelfish are relatively easy to breed in a dedicated tank — pairs will often claim a flat surface or broad leaf to lay eggs on, then aggressively guard the resulting fry.
