Loaches Care Guide: Kuhli, Yoyo, and Clown Loach Basics

Loaches are a diverse group of bottom and mid-level dwelling fish known for their active, often comical behavior and usefulness in controlling pest snail populations.

Tank Setup

Most loaches appreciate a soft substrate, driftwood, and plenty of hiding spots like caves or PVC pipe, since many species are shy without adequate cover.

Social Needs

Loaches are almost universally social and should be kept in groups — kuhli loaches in particular become far more visible and active when kept in groups of six or more, rather than hiding constantly when alone.

Diet

Sinking wafers and pellets, supplemented with occasional frozen bloodworms, cover most loaches’ needs. Many loaches, including clown loaches, are also effective at eating pest snails.

Size Considerations

Clown loaches can grow surprisingly large (over a foot in ideal conditions) and live for decades, so research adult size carefully — smaller species like kuhli loaches stay much more manageable for typical home tanks.
